Puducherry Records Landmark Medical Achievement as East Coast Hospitals Performs Youngest Free Kidney Transplant
East Coast Hospitals in Puducherry has achieved a medical milestone by performing the region’s youngest kidney transplant free of cost on 11-year-old Guruprasad. Supported by Dr. Blue India Foundation, the procedure highlights advanced medical expertise, maternal donation, and collaborative philanthropic support for life-saving treatment.
The recipient, 11-year-old Guruprasad, comes from a family facing severe socioeconomic hardship. He was raised alongside two siblings by his mother, who herself lives with significant medical disabilities and survives on a modest disability pension. The family’s difficulties intensified when Guruprasad was diagnosed with severe kidney failure, placing them under immense emotional and financial strain.
In a decisive act of maternal sacrifice, the boy’s mother donated her kidney to save her son’s life. The transplant procedure was successfully conducted at East Coast Hospitals under the supervision of Dr. N. Murugesan, a senior nephrologist who was part of the medical team that accompanied former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran to the United States for medical treatment.
The surgical team was headed by Dr. Venkatram, who expressed gratitude toward all contributors involved in enabling the procedure. He stated that the selfless contributions had restored life to the child and provided relief to the family, while also acknowledging continued assistance extended toward their needs, including medicines, food, and clothing.
Financial and logistical support for the procedure was provided by Mr. Vinayagam, Chennai Silks, and a Malaysian business couple, Datuk Dr. Ravee and Datin Kavery, through the Dr. Blue India Foundation, ensuring that the transplant was completed entirely free of cost.
Dr. Venkatram further noted that many similar families require timely medical intervention and support, inviting both patients in need and philanthropic individuals to connect with East Coast Hospitals. The institution is also expanding its transplant services under government healthcare schemes, including the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, the Employees’ State Insurance scheme, and the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, to make advanced treatments more accessible and affordable.
The successful procedure stands as a significant medical milestone for the region, underscoring the combined impact of clinical expertise, coordinated support, and structured healthcare assistance in delivering life-saving treatment to critically ill patients.
