Tamil Nadu Government Formation in Deadlock as TVK Falls Short; Rumours of DMK–AIADMK Alliance Emerge
Tamil Nadu faces political uncertainty after TVK emerges as the single-largest party with 108 seats but falls short of the 118-seat majority. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar expresses doubts over government formation. Meanwhile, speculation grows over a possible DMK–AIADMK alliance and shifting support from Left and VCK amid Vijay’s outreach efforts.
Despite the electoral performance, TVK has not yet reached the required majority. Initial indications suggested that the party could stake a claim to form the government with conditional support from the Congress. However, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who met Vijay for the second time in three days on Thursday, remains unconvinced that TVK currently commands sufficient support to form the government.
Amid this political uncertainty, speculation has intensified over a possible unprecedented political realignment in the state. Reports suggest that long-standing Dravidian rivals, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), may explore a potential alliance after more than five decades, with the objective of preventing Vijay and TVK from assuming power.
For such a development to materialise, support from the Left parties and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) is considered essential. Vijay has already reached out to these parties seeking their backing, but sources indicate that both the Left and VCK have so far been non-committal and are delaying a clear response.
As the political situation remains fluid, the absence of a clear majority or an assured coalition has left Tamil Nadu in a state of administrative uncertainty, with all major stakeholders engaged in intense negotiations behind the scenes.
The evolving scenario underscores a rare and complex post-election impasse in Tamil Nadu politics, where traditional rivalries, emerging political forces, and strategic alliances are all converging in a decisive contest for power.
