Mumbai Airport to Remain Shut for Six Hours Today, Major Disruption Expected for Air Passengers
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will remain completely shut for six hours on May 7 due to crucial runway maintenance work. No flights will operate between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm, affecting passengers and airline schedules at one of India’s busiest aviation hubs handling nearly 1,000 flights daily.
The temporary shutdown has been enforced to carry out critical maintenance work on Runway 09/27 and Runway 14/32 at one of India’s busiest airports. Airport authorities stated that the maintenance work is essential to ensure the safety and operational efficiency of flights and passengers. During the six-hour window, all runway-related technical and maintenance activities will be conducted under a pre-planned schedule.
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which handles nearly 1,000 flight movements daily, is expected to witness significant operational adjustments due to the temporary suspension. Millions of passengers travelling through Mumbai could experience inconvenience as flight schedules are impacted throughout the day.
Airport authorities clarified that all airlines had been informed well in advance regarding the scheduled maintenance operation. The prior notification allowed airlines sufficient time to restructure flight schedules and make necessary operational changes to minimise disruption for passengers. Officials maintained that the closure has been executed under a detailed and coordinated plan to avoid major difficulties during the maintenance period.
The airport remains one of the country’s busiest aviation hubs, recording more than 55 million passenger movements between 2024 and 2025. With thousands of travellers depending on the airport every day, the six-hour shutdown highlights the scale and importance of infrastructure maintenance required to sustain uninterrupted and safe air traffic operations in Mumbai
