Viral Video Claim Linking Bengal Election Results to Public Assault Debunked as Misleading

A viral social media claim linking Bengal election results to a public assault has been debunked. Investigation reveals the videos are unrelated, with the assault footage originating from a student clash in Dhaka, Bangladesh, exposing a case of misinformation spreading across platforms.

A viral collage circulating on social media following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s reported victory in the Bengal elections has sparked widespread confusion, falsely linking two unrelated videos and claiming political retaliation. The claim suggests that a man who publicly declared he would walk naked in Kolkata if Mamata Banerjee lost the election was later assaulted and stripped by the public after the results. However, investigations reveal that the two videos are unrelated and originate from entirely different contexts.

The first video in the viral collage shows a young man speaking to the media, bearing the logo of a news outlet named TNX News. A search using this identifier led to the original video on the outlet’s YouTube channel, where it was uploaded on April 24, 2026. In the footage, the individual identifies himself as Sufiyan and openly challenges that if the Bharatiya Janata Party defeats the Trinamool Congress, he would roam naked in Kolkata.

The second video in the collage depicts a man being brutally assaulted, with his clothes torn during the attack. Social media users have widely claimed that this individual is the same person from the first video and that the assault occurred as a consequence of the election outcome. However, further investigation contradicts this narrative.

A response to the viral post pointed out that the assault video is actually from Dhaka, Bangladesh. The user referenced an Instagram post by Bangladeshi journalist Ismail Sarkar, who shared a longer version of the video on April 23, 2026. Sarkar identified the location as the Shahbag area of Dhaka. Notably, while the viral clip features the song “Raktcharitra” playing in the background, the extended version includes commentary in the Bengali language.

Additionally, Bangladeshi news outlet Ajker Patrika also shared the same video on its Instagram handle on April 23, providing context that the footage captured a clash between two student groups, Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir, in Shahbag.

According to ekhon.tv, the conflict began when members of Chhatra Dal approached the police station to lodge a complaint regarding objectionable social media posts about Zaima Rahman, the daughter of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarik Rahman. Chhatra Dal alleged that Chhatra Shibir leader Abdullah Al Mahmud had shared controversial AI-generated images. In response, Chhatra Shibir denied the allegations, claiming that fabricated screenshots were being circulated to defame them.

As news spread that Chhatra Dal had reached the police station, members of Chhatra Shibir, along with journalists and representatives from the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union, also gathered at the Shahbag police station. The situation escalated into a violent clash between the two groups within the police station premises.

During the altercation, Musaddiq, the Literary and Cultural Affairs Secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union, was attacked. Another union leader, AB Zubair, was also assaulted. Both individuals reportedly took shelter inside the police station to save their lives.

The findings clearly establish that the assault video is unrelated to the Bengal election results and instead depicts a political clash in Bangladesh. The misleading pairing of these two videos has fueled false narratives and highlights how easily misinformation can spread during politically sensitive periods, distorting public perception and inciting unwarranted reactions.
