Indian Mangoes Command Premium Prices in London Amid Viral Video Highlighting Global Price Gap
A viral video from a UK-based Indian grocery store highlights the significant price difference of Indian mangoes between India and London. Kesar and Alphonso mangoes, widely affordable in India, are sold at premium rates abroad due to import costs, logistics, and high demand, turning a common fruit into a luxury product in international markets.
The video, shared by the Instagram page Gayatri Farmers Store, an Indian online grocery retailer based in Harrow that delivers across the United Kingdom, showcases a traditional-style street setup where mangoes are displayed on a cart. In the footage, an Indian woman can be heard calling out customers in a manner reminiscent of conventional street vendors, urging people to purchase mangoes.
The store currently offers premium Indian mango varieties such as Kesar and Alphonso. According to the pricing shown in the video, Kesar mangoes are being sold at approximately 16 pounds per dozen, while Alphonso mangoes are priced at around 18 pounds per dozen.
When compared to Indian retail prices, the difference becomes immediately evident. In India, mangoes are commonly available at prices ranging from 40 to 100 Indian Rupees per kilogram. Premium Alphonso mangoes in the domestic market can range between 700 and 2,000 Indian Rupees per dozen, depending on quality and region of purchase.
However, in international markets such as London, the same varieties are sold at significantly higher prices, estimated between 1,500 and 3,000 Indian Rupees per dozen or even more. This marks a multiple-fold increase compared to domestic pricing in India, effectively transforming a commonly available fruit into a premium imported product.
Industry factors contributing to this price escalation include import logistics, air freight charges, specialized packaging requirements, and limited supply chains. Additionally, the high global demand for Indian mango varieties, particularly Alphonso and Kesar, driven by their distinct flavor and quality, further influences pricing in overseas markets.
The viral video has therefore highlighted how a fruit widely accessible in India becomes a luxury commodity abroad, underlining the impact of global trade dynamics on everyday food items.
