Mumbai Airport to Shut Down for Six Hours on May 7 Amid Pre-Monsoon Runway Maintenance
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport will remain shut for six hours on May 7 due to pre-monsoon runway maintenance. Over 1,000 daily flights may face cancellations, delays, and diversions to nearby airports like Pune, Ahmedabad, and Goa.
According to Mumbai International Airport Limited, the runway closure was meticulously planned six months in advance. All domestic and international airlines were formally notified, and most carriers have already adjusted their schedules accordingly. Despite these preparations, hundreds of passengers traveling to and from Mumbai may still encounter cancellations, delays, and route diversions.
Airlines are expected to reroute several flights to nearby airports, including Pune, Ahmedabad, and Goa, to manage the operational halt. Travelers have been strongly advised to check their flight status through their respective airline applications to avoid inconvenience.
CSMIA remains one of the busiest aviation hubs in the world, handling an average of 950 to over 1,000 flight movements daily, including both departures and arrivals. In November 2025, the airport recorded a historic milestone by managing 1,036 flights within 24 hours, reinforcing its position as the world’s busiest single-runway airport.
To alleviate the growing burden on Mumbai’s primary airport, a second airport is being developed in Navi Mumbai, also under the management of the Adani Group. The scheduled six-hour shutdown on May 7 is aimed at completing critical pre-monsoon maintenance work to ensure uninterrupted and safe flight operations during the upcoming rainy season.
This temporary suspension underscores the scale and intensity of operations at Mumbai’s aviation hub and highlights the importance of proactive infrastructure maintenance in sustaining one of the busiest air traffic networks globally.
