The disruption originated on Wednesday evening when a 1,650-millimetre diameter main water pipeline located on Dr E Moses Road in Mahalaxmi developed a major crack. The incident led to widespread water shortages across multiple wards, including Mumbai Central and Tardeo, severely affecting daily supply.
Civic officials stated that repair operations were conducted continuously for approximately 44 hours under extremely challenging conditions, as the damaged pipeline section was situated nearly 15 feet underground. Around 40 engineers and workers from the Hydraulic Engineering Department were deployed to carry out the critical restoration work, which was completed ahead of schedule through round-the-clock efforts.
Following the successful completion of repairs, water supply began to be restored in a phased manner from Friday evening. Officials confirmed that normal and full-pressure supply is expected to resume from Saturday as distribution stabilises across the affected regions.
Local representatives also highlighted the extent of public inconvenience caused by the disruption. Agripada corporator Amreen Shehzad Abhrani noted that the shortage created significant difficulties on Friday, particularly affecting places of worship, where tanker water had to be arranged to meet essential daily requirements.
Officials further stated that the situation is now stabilising, with water pressure gradually returning to normal across all impacted areas as the system recovers from the emergency breakdown.
The restoration marks the resolution of a major civic disruption in the city’s core water distribution network, underscoring the scale of infrastructure stress and the rapid emergency response deployed to prevent prolonged hardship for residents.
