The incident occurred on Thursday evening when a cruise boat overturned during a sudden storm on the Bargi Dam reservoir situated on the Narmada River in Jabalpur district. Out of 29 passengers on board, nine lost their lives while 28 individuals were rescued in a coordinated emergency operation.
Following the incident, the services of cruise pilot Mahesh Patel, cruise helper Chhotelal Gond, and ticket counter in-charge Brijendra were terminated with immediate effect. An official confirmed that strict action was taken against those found responsible for operational negligence linked to the accident.
Further administrative measures were also enforced within the tourism management structure overseeing the site. Sunil Maravi, the manager of Hotel Maikal Resort and Boat Club Bargi, was suspended on grounds of alleged negligence in operational supervision. Regional manager Sanjay Malhotra was transferred to the Tourism Department headquarters in Bhopal, and a formal departmental inquiry was initiated to examine systemic lapses and accountability failures.
Authorities have indicated that the inquiry will assess compliance with safety protocols, operational oversight, and emergency preparedness at the site where the tragedy unfolded. The government action reflects a wider push to enforce accountability in tourism-related operations following the fatal incident.
