Woman Dies by Suicide in Bijnor After Alleged Online Harassment; Note Reveals Mental Distress
A woman in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide a day before her anniversary, allegedly due to severe online harassment. A suicide note and suspicious calls, including a threatening video call, have prompted a police investigation, highlighting the dangers of digital intimidation.
The incident took a disturbing turn when, two days after her death and following her last rites, her husband discovered a suicide note that detailed the emotional torment she had endured. In the note, the deceased wrote, “That man had really tormented your mother,” referring to what she described as a form of digital coercion, though she did not identify the individual responsible. She further expressed her emotional anguish, writing, “I hope I get a family like you in every birth. Take care of my children. Sorry, mother will have to die.”
Subsequent examination of her mobile phone revealed two to three suspicious phone numbers. Family members attempted to contact these numbers, but most remained unresponsive. However, one number responded through a video call, during which the caller allegedly issued threats to the family, raising serious concerns about intimidation and possible extortion.
Bijnor Superintendent of Police Abhishek Jha confirmed that a formal complaint was filed on April 30, two days after the woman’s death. Authorities have since initiated an investigation into the matter. The video call from one of the suspicious numbers has emerged as a crucial lead in identifying the individual or network allegedly responsible for the harassment.
The case underscores the growing threat of digital harassment and its severe psychological impact, highlighting the urgent need for stronger safeguards and swift law enforcement action in cases involving online intimidation and coercion.
