Mamata Banerjee Inspects EVM Strong Rooms Amid Tampering Allegations in Kolkata
Mamata Banerjee inspects EVM strong rooms in Kolkata amid allegations of tampering raised by TMC leaders. The Election Commission denies irregularities, while BJP accuses Banerjee of interference. Tensions rise ahead of May 4 results as exit polls suggest a strong BJP performance.
Leaders of the Trinamool Congress staged protests outside Netaji Indoor Stadium, claiming that closed-circuit television footage showed ballot boxes being opened without the presence of authorized polling agents. The party described the alleged incident as a grave threat to democratic processes, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Election Commission of India of acting in coordination.
Amid the controversy, Banerjee visited the inspection site as well as a school in her own constituency where voting machines were stored. She alleged that central security forces obstructed access to the premises and claimed that one of her party’s polling agents had been detained.
Responding to the allegations, the Election Commission of India issued a clarification stating that the footage in question depicted routine handling of postal ballots in a separate designated area. The commission maintained that all recognized political parties had been duly informed about the process, rejecting claims of irregularities.
The Bharatiya Janata Party strongly criticized Banerjee’s actions, accusing her of unconstitutional interference in the electoral process. The development comes at a critical juncture, with exit polls indicating a strong performance by the BJP against the ruling Trinamool Congress, which is seeking to extend its 15-year tenure in the state.
The confrontation underscores rising political friction and intensifies scrutiny over electoral transparency, placing the spotlight firmly on institutional credibility as the state awaits the final verdict.
