Trump’s "Hellhole" Slur Sparks Political Firestorm as India Issues Guarded Response

India issues a guarded response after US President Donald Trump reshared a social media post calling India and China "hellhole" countries. While MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal acknowledged the reports, the Congress party condemned the "anti-India" slur, demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi break his silence on Trump’s derogatory anti-immigrant rant and systemic bias allegations.

the Indian government on Thursday issued its inaugural response to controversial remarks by US President Donald Trump, who reshared a social media post characterizing India and China as "hellhole" nations. While the Ministry of External Affairs acknowledged the reports, the administration stopped short of delivering a detailed diplomatic rebuttal, even as domestic political pressure mounted for a more forceful condemnation of the derogatory anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Addressing a media briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal provided a brief official stance on the escalating situation. "We have seen some reports. That's where I leave it," Jaiswal stated, maintaining a measured distance from the inflammatory comments. This diplomatic restraint follows a post shared by Trump on his platform, Truth Social, which targeted immigration into the United States using disparaging language. The shared rant claimed that a baby born in the U.S. becomes an "instant citizen" and then facilitates bringing an "entire family in from China or India or some other hellhole on the planet."

The shared post further alleged a collapse of national identity and systemic bias, asserting that English is no longer spoken and claiming a lack of loyalty among the current immigrant class compared to previous generations. The text specifically alleged that internal mechanisms within the United States are "set up to run by Indians and Chinese," arguing that the American "melting pot" has devolved into a "cash in pot." These statements were reshared by Trump at a time when his approval ratings have seen a dip, triggering immediate political backlash and widespread criticism for their xenophobic undertones.

Domestically, the Congress party reacted with intense indignation, labeling the "hellhole" descriptor as "extremely insulting and anti-India." The opposition party targeted the government’s silence, demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi issue a firm response to Washington. Asserting that the comment "hurts every Indian," the Congress party criticized the Prime Minister's track record, alleging that he has remained silent despite repeated remarks by the US President. This development marks a significant point of friction in bilateral perceptions, highlighting a deep divide between the Indian government’s cautious diplomacy and the opposition’s demand for nationalistic defense against foreign disparagement.
