Magnitude 3.4 Earthquake Rattles South Gujarat; Shallow Tremors Near Vansda Spark Anxiety

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck South Gujarat early this morning, with the Institute of Seismological Research recording the epicenter 22 km from Vansda in Navsari. At a shallow depth of 5.0 km, the tremors caused anxiety but no loss of life or property damage. Authorities urge vigilance as the region remains a high seismic risk zone situated on active fault lines.

A light earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale struck the South Gujarat region early this morning, triggering a brief moment of anxiety among local residents as tremors vibrated through the Navsari district. The Institute of Seismological Research (ISR), headquartered in Gandhinagar, monitored and confirmed the seismic activity, which occurred at 5:27 AM IST. Official data from the ISR established that the event originated at a shallow depth of 5.0 km, with the epicenter located approximately 22 km east-southeast of Vansda. Despite the shallow nature of the quake, the low magnitude ensured that the impact remained minimal, and authorities have officially confirmed that there was no loss of life or significant damage to property.

In the immediate aftermath, local disaster management officials in the Navsari district reported that while residents felt slight vibrations, no emergency calls regarding structural damage were received. Local authorities have since urged citizens to remain calm but vigilant, citing that Gujarat falls under a high seismic risk zone. This administrative caution is underscored by the geological vulnerability of the region as documented by the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA). Historical data highlights the state's significant risk, noting that Gujarat has witnessed nine major earthquakes in the last 200 years. Shallow tremors, such as the one recorded today, remain a frequent occurrence in districts like Kutch and Navsari, which sit directly on active fault lines.
