Rajasthan Imposes Total Ban on Lethal Chinese Manjha Following String of Fatalities

The Rajasthan government has announced a total ban on the use, sale, and manufacture of Chinese manjha following over 10 deaths in five years. Under the Department of Environment and Climate Change's notification, violators face 5 to 7 years of imprisonment and fines up to 1 lakh. This formal crackdown aims to eliminate the lethal kite-string from the state through strict official enforcement.

In a decisive move to curb a recurring public safety hazard, the Rajasthan state government has enforced a comprehensive ban on the use, sale, and manufacture of Chinese manjha across the entire state. This stringent prohibition follows a formal notification issued by the Department of Environment and Climate Change, marking a critical intervention against the metallic and glass-coated strings that have plagued the region. The state’s crackdown comes as a direct response to a grim milestone, with more than 10 lives lost over the past five years due to the lethal nature of this thread.

The administrative mandate carries heavy legal repercussions for any individuals or entities found in violation of the order. Under the new regulations, offenders face severe penalties including up to five years of imprisonment, a fine of up to 1 lakh, or both. For those engaging in prolonged or repeated violations, the judicial consequences escalate further, with the potential for the prison sentence to be extended to seven years. To ensure the rigorous implementation of these orders, the state government has officially delegated specific responsibilities to various administrative and law enforcement officers.

This legislative action represents a significant effort to prioritize human life and environmental safety over hazardous kite-flying traditions. By targeting the entire lifecycle of the product—from its initial manufacture to its final use—the Rajasthan government aims to eliminate the threat posed by Chinese manjha once and for all. The involvement of multiple departments and the imposition of high-stakes criminal charges underscore the gravity of the situation and the state’s commitment to preventing further tragedies on its soil.
