Punjab Woman Doctor Found Dead; Family Accuses Estranged Husband of Years of Abuse, Extramarital Affair, and Fraudulent Loans
A woman doctor, Dr Meenakshi, was found dead at her home in Jalandhar, Punjab. Her family has accused her estranged husband, Dr Piyush, of physical and mental abuse, maintaining an extramarital affair, and obtaining loans worth Rs 2.5 crore in her name without authorization. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
Dr Meenakshi, who had been living separately from her husband, Dr Piyush, was found hanging inside her room. Dr Piyush is also a doctor and the owner of National Eye Hospital in Jalandhar. According to officials, all doors of the house were locked from the inside, forcing police personnel to break the glass windows to gain entry into the residence.
Dr Meenakshi and Dr Piyush were married in October 2018. Following the marriage, she purchased a Mahindra Thar and was personally paying the vehicle loan installments from her salary.
The deceased doctor's family has accused Dr Piyush of maintaining an extramarital relationship with a nurse employed at his hospital. According to her family, Dr Meenakshi became suspicious and later discovered evidence of the alleged relationship through closed-circuit television footage.
Her mother alleged that after the affair came to light, Dr Piyush frequently subjected Dr Meenakshi to physical assault. She further claimed that he would often telephone her after such incidents and admit to assaulting his wife, saying that he had made a mistake.
According to family members, Dr Meenakshi had been living alone since July 2025 because she was no longer willing to endure the alleged physical abuse. They stated that she was also considering filing for divorce. However, her father had advised her to wait before initiating legal proceedings.
The family has also raised serious allegations regarding financial irregularities. They claimed that when Dr Meenakshi recently visited a bank to explore the purchase of her own house, she discovered that loans amounting to approximately Rs 2.5 crore were already active in her name. According to the family, a portion of the loans was linked to a vehicle, while the remaining amount was associated with her husband's hospital. They further alleged that her signatures did not appear on the relevant loan documents.
Expressing doubts over the circumstances surrounding her daughter's death, Dr Meenakshi's mother said the family was awaiting the post-mortem examination findings. She stated that they were uncertain whether the case was a suicide or a homicide and believed that the medical examination would help establish the cause of death.
Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered on the basis of the allegations made by the deceased doctor's family. They also stated that Dr Piyush has not yet been questioned, as his mobile phone remains switched off.
The death of Dr Meenakshi has brought intense scrutiny to the allegations made by her family, including claims of domestic abuse, an alleged extramarital affair, and fraudulent financial transactions. As investigators await the post-mortem report and continue their inquiry, the case remains under active examination.
