Delhi Imposes Strict Ban on Cow and Prohibited Animal Sacrifices Ahead of Bakrid Festival

Delhi has imposed a strict ban on the sacrifice of cows, calves, camels, and other prohibited animals ahead of Bakrid, allowing only goats and sheep at authorized locations. Violations will attract criminal action. Similar restrictions upheld in West Bengal have impacted cattle markets, raising economic concerns and highlighting tensions between religious practices, livelihoods, and animal welfare debates across regions.

Delhi authorities have enforced a strict ban on the sacrifice of cows, calves, camels, and other prohibited animals ahead of the upcoming Bakrid festival scheduled for May 27 or 28. The directive permits sacrificial practices only at authorized locations and limits them exclusively to goats and sheep.

The government has clearly stated that any violation of these regulations will invite criminal proceedings. Officials have also mandated that no waste from such activities be allowed to accumulate on streets or clog public drainage systems, underscoring strict sanitation and public order requirements during the festival period.

In a parallel development, the High Court in West Bengal has upheld similar restrictions on animal sacrifice practices. Following the enforcement of these rules, cattle markets in the state have reportedly become largely empty, raising concerns among livestock rearers over significant economic losses. The situation has further intensified public discourse around the intersection of religious observance, livelihood dependence, and animal welfare considerations.

The coordinated regulatory actions in Delhi and West Bengal highlight an increasingly firm administrative stance on regulated religious practices, emphasizing legal compliance, urban hygiene, and animal protection while simultaneously exposing underlying economic and social tensions within affected communities.
