Modi's Call to Reduce Cooking Oil Use Links Economic Prudence With Public Health

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to reduce cooking oil consumption combines economic and health objectives. With India importing $19.5 billion worth of vegetable oils in 2025-26, experts say modest changes in household cooking habits can lower forex outflows, reduce pressure on the rupee, and help combat obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to Indians to reduce their consumption of vegetable oil has drawn widespread attention, with many initially questioning why a staple kitchen ingredient was included alongside fuel and gold in his broader call for austerity.

While the Prime Minister's advice to use less fuel and avoid excessive gold purchases was readily understood because both commodities are heavily imported and exert pressure on India's foreign exchange reserves, the reference to cooking oil appeared unexpected. However, the inclusion was both deliberate and economically significant.

India imported vegetable oils worth $19.5 billion during the 2025-26 financial year, resulting in a substantial outflow of foreign exchange for a commodity used daily in millions of households. Any reduction in edible oil imports can help narrow the country's current account deficit, thereby easing pressure on the rupee.

Prime Minister Modi has repeatedly spoken about limiting oil consumption in previous public addresses and episodes of his monthly radio programme, often emphasizing the health benefits of reduced oil intake. This time, however, the message carries a dual purpose, combining economic necessity with preventive healthcare.

With the ongoing Iran war disrupting global trade and energy routes, the government is exploring every possible measure to curb non-essential imports and conserve foreign exchange. Edible oil has emerged as one of the most significant areas where even modest changes in household consumption could yield a meaningful national impact.

The Prime Minister's appeal also highlights a growing public health concern linked to excessive consumption of fried snacks, processed foods, and oil-rich diets.

Dr. Sujit Paul, Health Expert at Zota Healthcare Ltd. (Davaindia), said the body requires only minimal amounts of oil and that overconsumption has become a silent lifestyle problem.

"Excessive fried food, chips, and processed food consumption has quietly become a lifestyle problem. The body needs only tiny amounts of oil. Excess intake leads to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and inflammation," he said.

Dr. Paul stressed that the solution is not to eliminate oil abruptly but to adopt healthier cooking methods. He recommended steaming, grilling, roasting, pressure-cooking, sautéing with minimal oil, and air-frying as effective techniques that reduce fat intake while preserving nutrition and flavour.

He noted that traditional Indian cuisine has long incorporated low-oil cooking practices such as boiling, pressure-cooking, and the use of yogurt-based and tomato-based gravies.

According to Dr. Paul, taste does not depend on excessive oil. Ingredients such as nuts, seeds, avocados, and fatty fish provide beneficial fats and essential nutrients, while herbs, spices, lemon, yogurt, garlic, and tomato-based dressings can enhance flavour naturally.

He described the approach as a form of preventive healthcare based on small, sustainable lifestyle changes rather than restrictive dieting.

Dr. Sameer Bhati, Public Health Analyst, said the Prime Minister's appeal is "a preventive health message wrapped inside an economic appeal."

He pointed to the sharp rise in obesity, hypertension, fatty liver disease, and diabetes across India, noting that diets high in fried and processed foods containing unhealthy fats are a major contributing factor.

Dr. Bhati cautioned against extreme interpretations of the Prime Minister's statement, emphasizing that nutrition experts do not advise eliminating oil entirely. Instead, they advocate healthier cooking techniques such as steaming, roasting, fermenting, grilling, pressure-cooking, and air-frying, all of which reduce dependence on refined oils while retaining nutrients.

He said many households are already adopting alternatives that add texture and richness to food without requiring large quantities of oil. These include yogurt, coconut milk, nut pastes, sesame, flaxseeds, and avocados.

Flavour, he added, can be developed through herbs, spices, lemon, garlic, and tomato-based preparations rather than oil-heavy tempering.

Summarizing the broader message, Dr. Bhati emphasized moderation, awareness, and long-term wellness.

"What makes the Prime Minister's message powerful is where the solution lies. Not in policy rooms. Not in industries, but in kitchens," he said.

Dr. Bhati added that if millions of households reduce edible oil consumption even slightly, the cumulative effect could be substantial. Lower imports would reduce foreign exchange outflows, narrow the current account deficit, lessen pressure on the rupee, and simultaneously contribute to a healthier population.

Prime Minister Modi's appeal, therefore, represents more than a dietary recommendation. It is a strategic call for collective action that connects household habits with national economic stability and public health, demonstrating how small changes in everyday kitchens can strengthen both the country's finances and the well-being of its citizens.
