Maharashtra Pushes Integrated Online Ticketing System for Mumbai Water Transport Network
Maharashtra Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane directed officials to fast-track an integrated online ticketing system for passenger water transport services in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The initiative aims to improve transparency, eliminate ticket queues, enhance passenger convenience, and support the expansion of the Water Metro and water taxi/ferry network across Mumbai.
According to an official release, officials from the Maharashtra Maritime Board, including CEO P Pradeep, along with representatives from ports, transport, and other departments, attended the meeting. The discussions focused on accelerating digital integration within the water transport sector amid the rapidly increasing number of passengers across the MMR.
Highlighting the growing pressure on existing transport infrastructure in the region, Rane said it has become essential to adopt digital systems for passenger water transport services. He stated that the proposed integrated online ticketing system would eliminate long queues for tickets, speed up the ticketing process, and significantly enhance transparency in operations.
The government is simultaneously working on the expansion of water transport services in the Mumbai region through a “Water Metro or water taxi/ferry network.” The initiative is aimed at reducing road and rail congestion by effectively leveraging coastal and creek routes across the MMR, the release stated.
Rane directed officials to expedite the implementation process and ensure operational readiness at the earliest. He also instructed authorities to organise training programmes for staff members and agencies concerned once the online ticketing system becomes functional, ensuring efficient and seamless service delivery for passengers.
Emphasising the importance of public participation and confidence in the new transport model, the minister called for a comprehensive awareness and outreach campaign to educate citizens about the upcoming facility and its benefits.
The review meeting also discussed multiple measures to improve passenger experience and increase the use of modern technology in water transport services across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The proposed digital integration marks a significant administrative step in Maharashtra’s broader strategy to modernise urban mobility and strengthen alternative transport infrastructure in one of the country’s busiest metropolitan corridors.
