PhonePe Launches AI Integration Agent to Slash Merchant Payment Gateway Onboarding Time from Days to Minutes
PhonePe has introduced an AI-powered Integration Agent for merchants to drastically reduce payment gateway onboarding time from days to minutes. Built on its proprietary Integration Intelligence layer, the system enables faster, more accurate, and efficient integration while improving developer productivity and supporting small and medium enterprises across India’s digital payments ecosystem with streamlined, conversational onboarding.
The newly introduced AI Integration Agent is built on PhonePe’s proprietary Integration Intelligence layer. According to the company, this underlying system ensures that the agent does not merely generate code but also comprehends the complexities and operational nuances of digital payment systems. By embedding domain-specific intelligence, the platform aims to deliver reliable, production-ready integration outputs aligned with official application programming interface specifications.
PhonePe highlighted three key advantages of the system. First, it enables faster integration, allowing merchants to complete onboarding through a single conversational interaction with the AI agent instead of extended technical implementation cycles. Second, it reduces errors by strictly following official API guidelines, ensuring accurate payload structures and implementing best practices for error handling. Third, it improves developer productivity by reducing time spent on integration tasks, allowing engineering teams to focus on core product development and service enhancement.
Rahul Chari, Chief Technology Officer and Founder of PhonePe, emphasized the strategic intent behind the development. He stated that integration has historically been one of the most time-consuming phases for any merchant attempting to go live with a payment gateway. He further explained that the company built the AI Integration Agent specifically to compress this timeline from weeks to minutes. By combining proprietary Integration Intelligence with AI-based coding assistance, PhonePe has developed a system that not only generates code but also understands payment workflows at a structural level.
The rollout of this technology is being prioritised for small and medium enterprises, a segment often constrained by limited access to dedicated development resources yet characterised by strong growth potential. PhonePe stated that by removing technical barriers, the platform will enable faster onboarding for such businesses, allowing them to begin accepting payments more quickly and accelerate revenue generation cycles.
The company expects that this advancement will substantially reduce merchants’ time-to-market, strengthening its position in India’s competitive digital payments ecosystem while enhancing accessibility and operational efficiency for businesses of varying scales.
