Mumbai Under Yellow Alert as IMD Warns of Intensifying Heat and Humidity Across City and Konkan Region
Mumbai faces a yellow alert as the IMD warns of rising heat and humidity across the city, Thane, and Konkan region. Temperatures may reach 36°C, with high humidity increasing discomfort. Authorities advise precautions as summer conditions intensify despite satisfactory air quality levels.
According to the IMD advisory released on Tuesday, discomfort levels are expected to gradually intensify, particularly during the afternoon hours. The city has been placed under a yellow alert, indicating that isolated pockets are likely to witness a noticeable spike in both temperature and humidity beginning Wednesday.
The impact of the rising heat is already evident across Mumbai. In areas such as Bandra, commuters were seen taking precautionary measures against the harsh afternoon sun. Many individuals used face coverings, scarves, and light clothing to protect themselves from the intensifying conditions. The sweltering weather has significantly altered daily routines, with protective measures becoming increasingly common at busy transit points and on city streets.
Despite the surge in temperature, air quality levels across Mumbai have remained stable. Reports indicate that the Air Quality Index across key monitoring locations continues to fall within the ‘satisfactory’ category, suggesting that pollution levels are currently under control even as heat and humidity rise.
Meteorological forecasts indicate that the city’s maximum temperature is likely to reach approximately 36 degrees Celsius within the next 48 hours. However, due to the high humidity typical of coastal regions, the perceived or ‘feels-like’ temperature is expected to be considerably higher, further exacerbating discomfort among residents.
Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution during peak heat hours. Residents have been advised to remain hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and wear light, breathable clothing to mitigate the effects of the heat. The advisory underscores the seasonal transition as Mumbai moves deeper into the summer period, with weather conditions becoming increasingly severe.
The alert highlights the growing impact of rising temperatures in urban coastal regions, where humidity amplifies heat stress, posing challenges to daily life and public health as the summer intensifies.
