From Driver’s Son to Political Contender: R Sabarinathan Leads in Virugambakkam, Turning Emotional Viral Moment into Election Narrative
R Sabarinathan, son of actor-politician Vijay’s former driver Rajendran, contests from Virugambakkam on a TVK ticket and leads early trends over DMK. A viral emotional video showing Vijay consoling him has amplified his rise, turning a personal story of loyalty and struggle into a significant political narrative in Tamil Nadu elections.
The 30-year-old, contesting on a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) ticket, is currently ahead of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate in the Virugambakkam constituency, marking what supporters view as a symbolic political breakthrough for the party in a key urban segment.
Sabarinathan’s rise gained public attention after a widely circulated video from late March showed him breaking down on stage during Vijay’s announcement of party candidates. In the footage, Vijay is seen consoling him and wiping his tears, followed by an embrace that quickly resonated across social media platforms.
The clip has since been repeatedly shared and analysed by supporters and political observers, becoming emblematic of Vijay’s close association with his long-time team and reinforcing the narrative of loyalty within his political organisation.
According to reports cited by news agency PTI, Sabarinathan’s father Rajendran initially wanted him to pursue engineering, reflecting a conventional middle-class aspiration before Sabarinathan shifted toward public life and politics.
After a period away, Sabarinathan returned to Chennai in 2024 to formally join TVK, where he positioned himself as a grassroots political worker who advanced through the party structure. His candidature from Virugambakkam has been described within the party as both symbolic and strategic, acknowledging Rajendran’s long-standing association with Vijay since the actor’s debut film “Naalaya Theerpu.”
Party insiders view his nomination as a gesture of recognition toward families closely associated with Vijay, while also contributing to the party’s broader narrative of social mobility and internal loyalty.
The emotional stage moment, now widely replayed during election coverage, has taken on symbolic significance, portraying themes of loyalty, struggle, and upward mobility that the party has increasingly projected as part of its political identity.
As early trends place him ahead in Virugambakkam, Sabarinathan’s trajectory has become a focal point in discussions about TVK’s evolving political presence and its attempt to convert personal narratives into electoral momentum.
