Severe Weather Warning: Deep Depression in Bay of Bengal Triggers Red Alert Across Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are on high alert as the IMD forecasts heavy rainfall and 60 km/h winds due to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. Districts including Chennai and Cuddalore brace for flooding, while disaster management teams and health departments remain on standby to manage the impact of this intense Northeast Monsoon surge.

The southern coast of India is bracing for a significant meteorological event as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a high-level warning for Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Driven by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal coupled with an intensified Northeast Monsoon, the region is expected to face torrential rainfall and gale-force winds over the coming days. This atmospheric shift has placed administrative machineries on high alert, as the anticipated weather pattern threatens to disrupt daily life and strain the infrastructure of major coastal hubs.

Central to the alert are the districts of Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, and Tiruvarur, where the IMD predicts rainfall ranging from moderate to heavy. In Puducherry and Karaikal, the situation is compounded by the forecast of squally winds reaching speeds of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour. These conditions are the direct result of a brewing depression that has significantly enhanced the moisture-laden winds of the monsoon, creating a volatile environment for the maritime states.

In response to the escalating threat, the Tamil Nadu government and district administrations have transitioned into a state of heightened preparedness. Local authorities have been directed to prioritize the maintenance of drainage systems to mitigate the perennial risk of urban flooding, while emergency response teams have been pre-positioned in vulnerable low-lying areas. The State Disaster Management Authority is closely monitoring the situation, coordinating with local bodies to ensure that power supply and transport networks remain resilient. In Puducherry, officials are weighing the necessity of preemptive closures for educational institutions and government offices to minimize public movement during the peak of the storm.

Safety protocols have been strictly enforced for the maritime community, with a total ban on fishing activities and clear directives for fishermen to remain ashore until the system dissipates. Public health departments have also been mobilized to counter the secondary threat of waterborne diseases, which often surge following heavy inundation. Residents are being urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly regarding structural safety, as high winds pose a risk of uprooting trees and damaging temporary or weak dwellings. As the region waits out the peak of this monsoon surge, the focus remains on minimizing casualties and ensuring a rapid recovery once the skies clear.
