India Signs Rs 1,950-Crore Deal for Indigenous Hi-Tech Mountain Radars to Strengthen Air Defence
India signs a Rs 1,950-crore deal with BEL to procure indigenously developed hi-tech mountain radars for the Indian Air Force. Designed by DRDO, these all-weather systems enhance surveillance in Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, boosting self-reliance and defence capability.
Defence sources state that these radars can prove very useful in strategic areas in Ladakh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. They can be deployed at high altitudes by helicopters, enabling rapid operational readiness in difficult terrain.
The Defence Ministry has signed a deal with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the two radars. The Rs 1,950-crore deal is a major step in India's journey towards self-reliance in defence infrastructure. The mountain radar has been designed and developed in Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a Bengaluru-based laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). BEL will manufacture, assemble, and supply them under the agreement.
The deal between the Defence Ministry and BEL has been inked under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, which aims to support self-reliance in defence procurement and strengthen indigenous capabilities.
According to defence sources, this radar can easily track
enemy fighter jets, missiles and drones, including low-flying cruise missiles and drones. The systems feature all-weather functionality, making them ideal for deployment in high-altitude strategic regions where operational conditions remain challenging.
Defence sources further state that these radars will help track enemy movements and enhance the Indian Air Force's capability. The agreement is seen as a boost to the Centre's Make in India initiative and sends a strong message of self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
The development underscores India’s strategic focus on strengthening surveillance and response systems in sensitive border areas while reinforcing its commitment to indigenous defence production.
