India and Russia Launch AviaIndra-2025, Reinforcing Strategic Air Power Cooperation

India has launched AviaIndra-2025, hosting the Russian Aerospace Forces for a joint air combat exercise from December 15 to 22. Featuring Su-30 MKI, Tejas, IL-78 and Mi-17 aircraft, the drill strengthens India–Russia defence cooperation and aerospace interoperability.

India has commenced a major joint air combat exercise with Russia, underscoring the enduring depth of defence ties between the two countries. The Indian Air Force is hosting the Russian Aerospace Forces for AviaIndra-2025, a bilateral air force exercise scheduled to run from December 15 to December 22, 2025. The drill marks the latest edition of the AviaIndra series, a structured programme of military cooperation that has been conducted regularly since its inception in 2014.

AviaIndra-2025 brings together frontline aerial assets from both nations, with joint flying operations planned on India’s Su-30 MKI and Tejas fighter aircraft, along with IL-78 aerial refuelling tankers and Mi-17 helicopters. The exercise is designed to enable both air forces to operate in a shared battlespace, focusing on coordinated missions, tactical interoperability, and the exchange of operational best practices drawn from their respective experiences.

According to official information, the exercise places strong emphasis on enhancing mutual understanding of air combat doctrines, refining joint mission planning, and strengthening aerospace coordination. By operating a diverse mix of fighters, transport and support aircraft, the drill aims to improve the ability of both forces to conduct complex air operations in a cooperative framework.

The AviaIndra series has steadily evolved into a key pillar of India–Russia defence engagement, reflecting a long-standing strategic partnership that spans training, technology, and operational collaboration. Hosting the 2025 edition further signals India’s intent to deepen military-to-military engagement with Russia, particularly in the aerospace domain, at a time when interoperability and joint preparedness are central to modern air power.
