Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A Approved: Airport Corridor Expansion Set to Transform Urban Connectivity

The Union Cabinet has approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro, extending a 6-kilometer corridor from Koteshwar Road to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport with five stations. The ₹2,169 crore project aims to reduce congestion, cut emissions, generate jobs, and expand the network to nearly 78 kilometers within four years.

The Union Cabinet has approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro project, marking a significant expansion of the city’s rapid transit infrastructure with a direct corridor to the airport. The decision was taken on June 10, 2026, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when the Cabinet formally cleared the new extension.

The approved corridor will extend 6 kilometers from Koteshwar Road to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, incorporating five new stations along the route. The project, with an estimated cost of ₹2,169 crore, is designed to strengthen last-mile connectivity and significantly improve passenger access to one of Gujarat’s busiest aviation hubs.

According to official provisions, the project is expected to generate approximately 2,000 jobs during the construction phase, along with around 500 permanent operational roles once services become functional. Authorities have stated that the expansion will ease traffic congestion across key urban stretches while also reducing vehicular emissions, contributing to a cleaner and more efficient transport ecosystem.

The metro extension is also expected to improve connectivity between residential zones, commercial districts, and major public venues, including the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, thereby integrating key urban and economic nodes within the city’s transport network.

Officials have projected a completion timeline of four years for the project, after which the Ahmedabad Metro network will expand to nearly 78 kilometers in total operational length. The approval comes amid growing dissatisfaction expressed by other major cities, including Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai, which have faced delays in the expansion of their respective metro systems.

The approval of Phase 2A is positioned as a strategic move to accelerate urban mobility development and strengthen integrated transport infrastructure in Ahmedabad, reinforcing its role as a rapidly modernizing metropolitan center.
