Massive Anti-Encroachment Drive Near Bandra Station Sparks Clashes as Western Railway Reclaims ₹600 Crore Land in Garib Nagar

Western Railway’s large-scale demolition drive in Garib Nagar near Bandra station to reclaim ₹600 crore railway land led to major clashes, police deployment, and commuter disruption. Around 500 hutments were removed following Bombay High Court approval, with violence erupting during removal of an alleged prayer structure, leaving several injured and families displaced ahead of Eid.

Mumbai witnessed a large-scale and forceful anti-encroachment operation as Western Railway carried out a demolition drive in Garib Nagar near Bandra railway station to reclaim railway land valued at approximately ₹600 crore. The action targeted encroachments that had developed dangerously close to active railway tracks, overhead electric lines, and essential railway infrastructure.

According to officials, nearly 500 hutments had been constructed in violation of safety norms in the area, posing a serious risk to rail operations and public safety. The demolition drive followed prolonged legal proceedings, with the Bombay High Court granting permission for the clearance operation earlier this year, thereby authorising the railway administration to proceed with the eviction.

The operation led to heavy deployment of police personnel and extensive barricading around Bandra station, resulting in severe traffic congestion and major disruption for daily commuters. The situation remained tense as authorities continued clearing structures in phases.

On the second day of the drive, tensions escalated sharply when officials attempted to remove an allegedly illegal place of worship located near the Bandra East skywalk. The action triggered protests that quickly turned violent. Police reported that protesters resorted to stone pelting and threw objects at officials on duty, prompting a lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

At least seven police personnel and six protesters sustained injuries during the clashes, while ten individuals were taken into custody. An FIR has been registered in connection with the violence.

Western Railway has stated that the reclaimed land is crucial for future expansion plans and infrastructure upgrades around Bandra station, a key suburban railway hub. However, the eviction drive has left hundreds of families displaced and anxious about their future, particularly as the festive period of Eid approaches, intensifying concerns over rehabilitation and relief.

The operation has highlighted the persistent conflict between urban infrastructure development and long-standing informal settlements in one of Mumbai’s most densely populated railway corridors.
