BJP Attacks Sanjay Raut Over Remarks to Donald Trump on West Bengal Election Results
The BJP strongly criticised Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut after his remarks to US President Donald Trump on the West Bengal Assembly election results. The controversy intensified after Raut questioned the fairness of the electoral process, prompting the BJP to accuse the opposition of tarnishing India’s democratic image internationally.
Reacting to Raut’s remarks, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla described the Rajya Sabha member as the “joker of Indian politics” and alleged that opposition leaders routinely question constitutional institutions whenever election outcomes do not favour them.
In a post on X addressed to Trump, Sanjay Raut questioned reports claiming that the US President had congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the BJP’s victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Raut stated that the election was an “internal matter of India’s federal democracy” and argued that any external endorsement appeared “premature and misplaced.”
The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader further claimed that “serious concerns” had emerged regarding the conduct of the elections. He alleged that there were complaints of fear, intimidation, and systemic pressure during the electoral process. Raut also accused the Election Commission of failing to act impartially and claimed that its functioning appeared to favour the BJP, raising questions about what he described as “institutional neutrality.”
Raut additionally questioned the deployment of central security forces during the elections, alleging that their presence created “coercion rather than confidence.” Referring to concerns raised by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, he said allegations surrounding the fairness of the electoral process reflected a “broader unease” that could not be ignored.
“Democracy is not just about elections — it is about ensuring they are free, fair and credible. When serious allegations arise, they warrant scrutiny, not celebration,” Raut stated in his post while urging Trump to adopt what he called a more balanced view of the situation.
Responding to the remarks, Poonawalla said Indian democracy was being praised globally while opposition leaders were spreading what he termed “false narratives” about the country’s electoral system. He asserted that people across the world were reacting to the BJP’s performance in West Bengal and referred to reports claiming that Trump had congratulated the BJP on its victory.
“Indian democracy is being hailed across the world and this man is complaining about India on facts which are not even there,” Poonawalla said. He further alleged that opposition parties consistently raise questions over constitutional bodies and election processes after electoral defeats.
The political confrontation has intensified the debate over the credibility of electoral institutions and the role of international commentary in India’s domestic democratic processes, with both the BJP and opposition parties escalating their attacks following the high-stakes West Bengal Assembly election results.
