Amit Shah Arrives in Kolkata to Lead Crucial BJP Legislative Party Meeting for West Bengal Chief Minister Selection
Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata as Central Observer to chair the BJP Legislative Party meeting for selecting West Bengal’s new Chief Minister after the party’s electoral victory. The Assembly was dissolved under constitutional provisions, ending Mamata Banerjee’s tenure and paving the way for a new government formation.
Upon landing at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Amit Shah proceeded directly to Dakshineswar Kali Temple, where he offered prayers before undertaking his official responsibilities. The visit underscored the ceremonial and political significance of the day’s proceedings.
The BJP Legislative Party meeting has been convened to elect the leader of the legislative party, who is expected to assume the office of Chief Minister. The development comes in the aftermath of the Bharatiya Janata Party securing a commanding majority with 207 seats in the West Bengal Assembly elections, while the Trinamool Congress was reduced to 80 seats.
Following the electoral verdict, West Bengal Governor RN Ravi exercised constitutional powers under Article 174(2)(b) to dissolve the Legislative Assembly, formally bringing an end to Mamata Banerjee’s tenure as Chief Minister. The administrative decision paved the way for the formation of a new government under the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Amit Shah’s role as Central Observer is pivotal in ensuring an orderly and structured leadership transition within the party. The selection of the new legislative leader is expected to define the administrative direction of West Bengal in the coming term, with the BJP preparing to assume governance following its electoral mandate.
The proceedings in Kolkata are being closely watched as the state enters a significant political shift, with the outcome of the meeting set to determine the next Chief Minister and the future administrative framework of West Bengal.
