Hung Verdict in Tamil Nadu: Congress Backs C. Vijay-Led TVK Amid Government Formation Crisis
A major political shift unfolds in Tamil Nadu after a hung assembly result in the April 23 elections. Congress extends conditional support to C. Vijay-led TVK, pushing the party closer to power but still short of a majority. Governor demands proof of strength, while DMK and BJP react sharply amid rising political tension and uncertainty over government formation.
The TVK, led by C. Vijay, emerged as the single largest party in the 234-seat Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections but failed to reach the required majority mark of 118 seats. Despite its strong performance, the party remained short of the numbers needed to independently form the government.
In a crucial political turn, Congress, holding five Members of the Legislative Assembly, extended conditional support to TVK while explicitly excluding the Bharatiya Janata Party from any alignment. This support increased TVK’s effective strength to 113 seats, bringing it closer to a governing majority but still below the constitutional threshold.
However, the Governor has demanded formal proof of majority support before proceeding with the swearing-in process, adding a layer of constitutional scrutiny to the already tense political situation in the state.
The development has triggered sharp political reactions. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has described Congress’s move as a betrayal, alleging it undermines established political alignments in the state. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has publicly mocked the reversal, intensifying the political confrontation.
At the same time, concerns over alleged attempts to poach Members of the Legislative Assembly have surfaced, further deepening uncertainty as TVK attempts to consolidate its position and secure additional legislative backing.
As the situation unfolds, Tamil Nadu remains in a state of political suspense, with final numbers and formalities still under strict constitutional examination before any government formation can be confirmed.
