Bihar Cabinet Expansion Set for May 7: High-Profile Induction of Nishant Kumar Sparks Political Intensity
Bihar is set for a major cabinet expansion on May 7 at Gandhi Maidan, with 27 ministers expected to take oath. Nishant Kumar’s possible induction into the state cabinet after senior JDU consultations and a late-night agreement has intensified political activity across Bihar amid ongoing party deliberations and ministerial finalisation.
Preparations are underway for the grand ceremony, where Nishant Kumar is likely to take oath on Thursday. Reports indicate that he consented to join the government following a late-night meeting on Tuesday with senior leaders of the Janata Dal (United). The discussions are believed to have played a decisive role in persuading him to accept a formal position in the administration.
In connection with the cabinet formation, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, reached Patna from New Delhi, while several senior Janata Dal (United) leaders convened at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s residence at 7 Circular Road. The meeting focused on finalizing the ministerial list, which is expected to receive official approval shortly.
The party is likely to release the names of Janata Dal (United) ministers later in the evening. Nishant Kumar is currently on a Bihar outreach tour, engaging with citizens across districts, listening to grievances, and assessing feedback on developmental initiatives undertaken during Nitish Kumar’s tenure.
Earlier, Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary had stated that he would welcome Nishant Kumar’s inclusion in the cabinet, adding further political significance to the development. Although Nishant had initially declined any involvement in active politics and remained detached for an extended period, senior party leaders and close associates reportedly convinced him during late-night deliberations on Tuesday that his participation could be crucial for both the party and the state administration. Following extended discussions, he agreed to join the cabinet.
Political observers suggest that Nishant Kumar’s ongoing outreach campaign may lay the foundation for a broader political role in the future. While no official confirmation has yet been issued, speculation regarding his induction has significantly intensified political discourse in Bihar.
Reports further indicate that approximately 27 ministers are expected to take oath at Gandhi Maidan on May 7. Of these, 12 are likely to be from the Bharatiya Janata Party, 11 from the Janata Dal (United), two from the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and one each from the Hindustani Awam Morcha and Rashtriya Lok Samta Party. Additionally, six ministerial positions are expected to remain vacant in anticipation of future political adjustments. Bihar’s cabinet can accommodate a maximum of 36 ministers, including the Chief Minister, in line with the legislative strength.
It is also notable that Nishant Kumar formally joined the Janata Dal (United) on May 8, 2026, when party working president Sanjay Jha granted him membership. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was not present during the occasion.
The impending cabinet expansion and the possible induction of Nishant Kumar mark a significant moment in Bihar’s evolving political landscape, with potential long-term implications for the state’s governance structure and party dynamics.
