Great Nicobar Project Sparks Strategic Push and Political Storm Over Environmental and Tribal Concerns

The Great Nicobar Project ignites debate as military experts highlight its strategic importance near the Strait of Malacca, while political leaders raise concerns over environmental damage, tribal rights violations, and alleged land acquisition controversies in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The strategic importance of Great Nicobar Island has come into sharp focus as Major General GS Rawat (Retd) underscored its proximity to the Strait of Malacca, a critical global trade route, while political opposition raised serious concerns over alleged land acquisition and environmental risks linked to the ambitious development project.

Speaking on Saturday, Major General GS Rawat (Retd) stated that Great Nicobar lies approximately 130–140 kilometres from the Strait of Malacca, through which 35–40 percent of global and Chinese trade flows. He emphasized that this geographical advantage makes the region vital for India’s security and economic ambitions. Acknowledging concerns about ecological disruption, he asserted that any large-scale government-approved investment would have considered the interests of indigenous tribes and environmental balance. He stressed that ecology, economy, and environment must progress together if India aims to achieve a $10 trillion economy while ensuring national security.

Highlighting the economic dimension, Rawat pointed to the proposed international container transit point in Great Nicobar, stating that it would deliver substantial economic benefits comparable to those currently derived from Colombo and Singapore. He said the project would significantly reduce economic burdens and described the island as an “unsinkable base” offering natural dominance over the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean, and the Gulf region. He added that any tree loss would be compensated through replantation and expressed confidence that the project would proceed while maintaining a balance between ecological preservation and development.

The project has also triggered political controversy. Earlier this week, Congress Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi alleged large-scale land acquisition, claiming that tribal rights and environmental safeguards were being undermined. Addressing reporters in Vijayapuram, the Raebareli representative accused authorities of transferring land to large corporate entities, including Adani, and stated that the Forest Rights Act was not being implemented effectively. He further claimed that settlers and tribal communities were not receiving proper compensation and warned that the heritage of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was being eroded. Gandhi said efforts would be made to raise national awareness and protect the rights of local populations.
