Ford Recalls 1.4 Million F-150 Pickups Over Dangerous Transmission Downshift Defect
Ford is recalling 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks (2015-2017) in the United States due to a critical transmission fault causing sudden downshifts into second gear. The defect, linked to signal failures between the sensor and powertrain control module, has resulted in injuries and crashes. Dealers will provide free software updates and potential hardware replacements to mitigate the risk.
Data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals the root of the crisis is an intermittent signal fault occurring between the transmission range sensor and the vehicle’s powertrain control module. When this critical electronic communication is disrupted, the truck’s transmission unexpectedly forces a lower gear, generating a sudden drop in wheel speed that may cause the rear tires to slip under specific driving conditions. Ford has confirmed it is currently aware of at least one crash and two injuries potentially linked to this defect. The gravity of the situation is further underscored by a massive volume of documented grievances, including 444 warranty claims and over 100 customer service reports.
The surfacing of this defect follows a period of mounting pressure, as regulators initiated a preliminary review into reports of unexpected downshifting in 2025. Technical investigators eventually determined that prolonged exposure to heat and vibration gradually degrades electrical connections, ultimately compromising the transmission sensor signal and triggering the dangerous fault. To rectify the hazard, Ford dealers will provide a software update for the powertrain control module at no cost to the owners. Furthermore, in cases where symptoms of the failure have already manifested, additional components such as the transmission lead frame may be replaced.
Owners of the affected vehicles are scheduled to receive notification by mail, with interim notices slated for distribution in late April and subsequent communications to follow once the comprehensive remedy is fully accessible. This recall strikes at the heart of one of the best-selling vehicle lineups in the United States, highlighting an era of intensified scrutiny regarding the reliability of software and electronic components in the modern automotive landscape.
