Structural Failures Claim Lives: Elderly Resident Killed in Bhandup Slab Collapse Following Navi Mumbai Tuition Tragedy
A 75-year-old man, Susai Devdas Kaunder, was killed in a slab collapse at Patkar Compound in Bhandup West. This follows a tragic March incident in Navi Mumbai where a student died during a tuition class collapse at Vidya Bhavan. Authorities suspect structural weakness in these fatal events, raising urgent concerns regarding building safety and renovation oversight in urban residential structures.
Administrative officials have commenced an assessment of the structure and surrounding buildings to prevent further mishaps as the community grapples with the loss. While the exact cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, officials suspect that underlying structural weakness may have played a decisive role in the unfortunate incident. This fatality follows a similar tragedy earlier in March at the Vidya Bhavan building in Sector 2, Koparkhairane. In that instance, a routine evening tuition class turned fatal at around 5:20 pm when a first-floor slab crashed into the ground-floor residence of teacher Shamli Chaudhary. That building, constructed in 1998 and containing sixteen flats, had undergone renovation last year, though Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation chief Dr. Kailas Shinde confirmed that no roof repairs were carried out during the process.
The Navi Mumbai incident resulted in the death of Manish Mhase, a Class 7 student who succumbed to critical head injuries at Vashi Municipal Hospital after a chunk of the slab fell directly on him. Eleven other students suffered minor to moderate injuries and underwent treatment, while Shamli Chaudhary was discharged following primary medical care. Fire brigade teams from Vashi, Koparkhairane, and Airoli, assisted by local residents, managed to pull all trapped students from the rubble amid an atmosphere of dust and chaos. These recurring structural failures highlight a critical need for rigorous building maintenance and official oversight. The loss of Susai Devdas Kaunder and Manish Mhase serves as a stark reminder of the lethal consequences inherent in neglected structural integrity within residential settlements.
