As Bittu walked past the protesters, Rahul Gandhi remarked, "Here is a traitor walking right by. Look at the face,' and even offered to shake his hand, saying, "Hello brother, my traitor friend. Don't worry, you will come back (to Congress)."
Refusing the handshake, Bittu hit back sharply, saying "desh ke dushman" (enemies of the nation), and made it clear that he does not associate with those he considers hostile to the country. The two leaders were then seen exchanging heated words before moving on.
Ravneet Bittu on Rahul Gandhi's traitor remark
Responding to Rahul Gandhi's traitor remark, Bittu accused the Congress leader of insulting the sentiments of Sikhs and Punjabis.
Bittu alleged that the Gandhi family was responsible for the killing of thousands of Sikhs and Punjabis, referring specifically to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and naming former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. "I also come from that family. It is painful to hear Rajiv Gandhi’s name being mentioned alongside Shaheed-e-Azam Beant Singh," he said.
He further claimed that his relationship with the Congress leadership was cordial when he was part of the party, but changed after he joined the BJP. "As long as I was with them, everything was fine. Now that I am in the BJP, I am being addressed with such words,' Bittu said.
Describing Rahul Gandhi's gesture of offering a handshake as arrogant, Bittu said the Congress leader behaved "like an emperor." He added that he refused to shake hands, saying, "They are enemies of the nation. I will not shake hands with the Gandhi family, which is responsible for the killing of Sikhs."
