Indian Army’s Remount and Veterinary Corps to Make Historic Republic Day Debut with Animal Contingent

The Indian Army’s Remount and Veterinary Corps will make history at the Republic Day Parade 2026, marching on Rajpath for the first time with an animal contingent featuring Bactrian camels, Zanskar ponies, raptors, and Army dogs, showcasing tradition, discipline, and military capability.

New Delhi: In a landmark moment for India’s annual Republic Day celebrations, the Indian Army’s Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) will march on Rajpath for the first time with a full animal contingent during the Republic Day Parade 2026. The rare presentation will bring together trained animals and their handlers, offering spectators a distinctive glimpse into a lesser-seen but vital arm of the Army.

The contingent will feature an impressive and diverse lineup, including Bactrian camels, hardy Zanskar ponies, trained raptors, and Army dogs. Each animal represents a specialized role within military operations, particularly in challenging terrains and operational environments where traditional machinery may be limited. Their inclusion underscores the continuing relevance of animal support units in modern military logistics, surveillance, and ceremonial traditions.

Officials said the parade segment will showcase the exceptional discipline, training standards, and coordination between the animals and their military handlers. Beyond visual spectacle, the march is intended to highlight the Remount and Veterinary Corps’ longstanding contribution to maintaining animal health, operational readiness, and welfare across the armed forces.

The display is expected to stand out as one of the most distinctive elements of the 2026 parade, reflecting a blend of tradition, operational capability, and quiet valor. By placing the spotlight on the RVC and its animal contingent, the Indian Army aims to honor a legacy that often remains behind the scenes but is integral to military effectiveness.
