The victim, identified as Angel Chakma, was a student from India’s North Eastern region. The killing had sparked concern and debate, prompting questions about possible racial violence. However, the SSP clarified that evidence collected during the investigation does not support claims of a racially motivated attack or a pre-planned, sponsored killing. Police have categorically ruled out any communal or ethnic angle at this stage of the probe.
According to officials, six individuals were named as accused in the case. Five of them have been arrested and are currently in police custody, while one suspect, described as a Nepalese national, remains absconding. To expedite the arrest, Dehradun police have announced a reward of ₹1 lakh for information leading to the capture of the fugitive accused.
The SSP stated that the arrests were made following sustained investigation, examination of evidence, and questioning of those involved. Law enforcement agencies are continuing efforts to track down the remaining accused, with teams deployed at multiple locations and surveillance being intensified.
