ABVP Convoy Sparks Chaos in Meerut, Commuters Harassed as Police Register Case
Chaos erupted in Meerut’s Sadar Bazaar after an ABVP convoy allegedly harassed commuters by hanging from moving vehicles and disrupting traffic. Viral videos triggered police action, with cases registered in Abu Lane and Begum Bridge areas as authorities begin an investigation.
According to local officials, the disturbance unfolded in the Sadar Bazaar area, one of the city’s crowded zones, where a group of ABVP workers moved through the streets in a convoy. Several individuals were seen hanging out of moving vehicles, shouting slogans and engaging in unruly behavior that disrupted traffic and intimidated passersby. The reckless display caused inconvenience and fear among commuters navigating the already congested area.
The incident quickly gained traction on social media after videos showing the activists’ actions went viral, prompting public outrage and calls for accountability. Police sources said that when attempts were made to intervene, some of the individuals allegedly issued threats and tried to flee the scene.
Following the incident, cases were registered in connection with the disruption in areas falling under Sadar Bazaar police station limits, including Abu Lane and the Begum Bridge locality. The legal action reflects alleged violations related to public nuisance, traffic obstruction, and intimidation, though officials said the investigation is ongoing and further details will emerge as evidence is reviewed.
Sadar Bazaar Station In-charge Vijay Rai was present at the location during the episode. However, the situation could not be brought under immediate control, allowing the convoy to continue its disruptive movement for some time before dispersing.
Police authorities have confirmed that they are examining video footage and eyewitness accounts to identify those involved and determine individual responsibility. Officials said appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law once the probe is completed.
The incident has once again raised concerns about public safety, law enforcement preparedness, and the misuse of public spaces for disruptive demonstrations, particularly in densely populated urban centers like Meerut. As the investigation progresses, the case is likely to serve as a test of how swiftly authorities respond to incidents that threaten everyday civic order.
