German Chancellor Friedrich Merz Launches Sharp Attack on Trump-Era Tariff Policies

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sharply criticizes Donald Trump’s tariff and trade policies, warning they have weakened Europe’s global competitiveness. He says transatlantic relations are undergoing deep structural change with long-term political and economic consequences.

Berlin — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has delivered a pointed critique of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade and tariff policies, warning that their long-term consequences have contributed to Europe’s weakening position in the global economic race. Speaking candidly about shifting international dynamics, Merz said Germany and the wider European Union are steadily losing ground in global competitiveness, a decline he noted has accelerated in recent years.

Merz linked this erosion partly to the trade approach pursued by Washington during the Trump presidency, arguing that aggressive tariff measures and protectionist strategies disrupted established economic balances. He stressed that such policies did not emerge overnight and should not be viewed as temporary disruptions that will simply fade with time.

Emphasizing the seriousness of the moment, the German leader said politics is not a platform for wishful thinking or short-term fixes. According to Merz, the political and economic shifts triggered during the Trump era reflect deeper structural changes in transatlantic relations rather than isolated policy disagreements.

He further observed that the relationship between Europe and the United States is undergoing a fundamental transformation, one that is reshaping global politics and economic cooperation. This evolving dynamic, Merz warned, will have lasting implications for international trade frameworks, strategic alliances, and economic stability.

The remarks underscore growing concern within Europe about its future economic resilience and its role in a rapidly changing global order. As Germany reassesses its strategic priorities, Merz’s comments highlight the urgency of adapting to a new phase in transatlantic relations—one where long-standing assumptions about trade, cooperation, and leadership can no longer be taken for granted.
