Five Killed After Bolero Plunges Into Deep Gorge in Uttarakhand’s Champawat District

A Bolero SUV returning from a wedding plunged nearly 200 metres into a gorge in Uttarakhand’s Champawat district, killing five people late Tuesday night. Police and district officials launched a difficult rescue and opened an investigation, with early suspicion pointing to possible driver intoxication.

A late-night road tragedy in Uttarakhand’s Champawat district claimed five lives after a Bolero SUV veered off a mountain road and tumbled nearly 200 metres into a steep gorge, officials said on Wednesday. The victims were returning from a wedding when the vehicle lost control on a sharp bend and crashed into the ravine.

Emergency teams from the local police and district administration rushed to the spot as soon as the incident was reported, conducting a challenging rescue operation in the rugged terrain. According to officers involved in the preliminary investigation, there is suspicion that the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, though a formal confirmation is awaited.

Authorities have initiated an inquiry to establish the exact sequence of events and determine whether negligence or overspeeding contributed to the accident. The district administration has also assured that support will be extended to the families of the deceased, while forensic and mechanical examinations of the vehicle are expected to follow.

The fatal plunge has once again underscored the persistent risks of night-time travel on hilly roads in the region, where sharp curves, reduced visibility, and narrow stretches frequently lead to deadly mishaps. Officials noted that the investigation’s findings could play a crucial role in strengthening enforcement measures and improving road safety awareness across the district.
