Punjab to Establish High-Level Basmati Center of Excellence as CM Bhagwant Singh Mann Forges Strategic Agricultural Ties in Netherlands
Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann announces a high-level Basmati Center of Excellence following a strategic Netherlands tour. The initiative aims to break the wheat-paddy cycle through Dutch expertise in AI, automation, and sustainable farming. By partnering with LT Foods and Dutch ministries, Punjab seeks to boost farmer income and implement global auction models to secure a resilient agricultural future.
The Chief Minister conducted a comprehensive tour of the LT Foods facility in Rotterdam, where company officials detailed their global presence across 80 countries and their robust network with over one lakh farmers. Underscoring the imperative of sustainable farming, Mann highlighted the need to reduce pesticide use to meet international benchmarks and elevate Basmati rice in the global market. Following these deliberations, LT Foods committed to establishing the Center of Excellence in Punjab, promising assured procurement and the promotion of cultivation techniques with minimal pesticide reliance. Seeking to bridge the gap between research and field application, the Chief Minister advocated for strengthened cooperation between Dutch multinationals and Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). He noted with concern that diminishing profit margins have rendered farming an unremunerative profession, causing severe livelihood hardships, and observed that yield-enhancing technologies have already been utilized beyond their saturation point.
Mann expressed profound optimism that this new center will serve as a catalyst for increasing real farm income and halting the over-exploitation of natural resources through enhanced Basmati production. His diplomatic itinerary included a visit to the Aalsmeer Floriculture Auction Market, the world's largest plant and flower trading hub, where he analyzed the sophisticated Dutch auction system encompassing production, logistics, and global distribution. Expressing a strong intent to replicate this model in Punjab, the Chief Minister aim to bolster the agricultural value chain and trigger a significant rise in farmer income. Furthermore, a high-level delegation led by Mann held exhaustive meetings with the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security, and Nature Resources, headed by the Director-General. Invoking the long-standing agricultural cooperation between India and the Netherlands, he sought Dutch specialization in water-efficient farming, crop diversification, and technology-driven productivity.
