Google Maps Introduces AI-Powered ‘Ask Maps’ Feature in India, Transforming Travel Planning
Google Maps launches AI-powered ‘Ask Maps’ feature in India and the US, enabling travellers to plan routes and discover places through conversational queries, personalised maps, and real-time insights from millions of locations and contributors worldwide.
Travelling often presents challenges beyond reaching a destination, particularly when deciding where to eat, which route to take, or identifying locations worth visiting. New cities can feel both exciting and overwhelming, especially when plans change unexpectedly. Addressing these concerns, Google Maps has launched ‘Ask Maps’, a feature designed to simplify travel planning by enabling users to interact with the platform using natural, conversational queries.
Google announced the rollout through its official social media channels, describing it as one of the most significant upgrades to the platform in more than a decade. The company stated that the feature is “fundamentally changing what a map can do” by enabling responses to complex, real-world questions that were previously difficult to address through basic searches.
The ‘Ask Maps’ feature leverages Google Maps’ extensive database of over 300 million locations and integrates insights from more than 500 million contributors worldwide. It combines user reviews, photos, traffic data, and Popular Times to generate personalised and context-aware recommendations.
Unlike traditional search queries such as “restaurants near me,” users can now pose detailed questions through text or voice. The platform responds with a customised map displaying relevant places, suggested routes, estimated travel times, and quick-access options to begin navigation, save locations, or share travel plans. Additionally, the feature supports follow-up questions, allowing users to refine their queries without initiating a new search.
The introduction of ‘Ask Maps’ marks a pivotal development in digital navigation, reflecting Google’s effort to integrate artificial intelligence into everyday travel experiences and enhance decision-making for users navigating unfamiliar environments.
