India Emerges as First Responder After Cyclone ‘Ditwah,’ Launches ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’ to Aid Sri Lanka

India became the first responder after Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka, launching Operation Sagar Bandhu to deliver immediate relief, medical aid, and essential supplies. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath praised the timely assistance, calling it vital to strengthening disaster response efforts.

Colombo — In the immediate aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, India mounted the first international relief response to assist Sri Lanka, launching a rapid humanitarian mission under “Operation Sagar Bandhu,” Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed on Wednesday. The swift intervention underscored New Delhi’s role as a key regional partner in times of crisis.

Speaking on India’s assistance, Herath said the operation was initiated without delay, making India the first responder to the cyclone’s impact on the island nation. As part of the mission, India delivered emergency relief supplies, medical assistance, and other essential resources to affected areas, helping local authorities manage the immediate humanitarian needs caused by the severe weather event.

The Sri Lankan foreign minister noted that the support provided through Operation Sagar Bandhu played a crucial role in strengthening the country’s disaster response efforts at a critical moment. He emphasized that timely external assistance is vital during large-scale natural disasters, particularly when infrastructure and essential services face sudden strain.

Cyclone Ditwah caused widespread disruption in parts of Sri Lanka, prompting urgent relief and recovery measures. India’s rapid deployment of aid highlighted the operational readiness of its humanitarian assistance framework and reflected the close bilateral coordination between the two neighboring countries.
