Modi Government Approves ₹10,000-Crore Mega Fertiliser Plant in Assam, Boosting State’s Industrial Ambitions
The Centre has approved a ₹10,000-crore fertiliser plant in Assam’s Namrup with a capacity of 12 lakh metric tonnes, far exceeding the state’s original proposal. Announced by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, the project reflects PM Narendra Modi’s vision for industrial growth and state-led resource empowerment.
According to the Chief Minister, Assam had initially requested a fertiliser facility with a production capacity of five lakh metric tonnes of ammonia and urea. However, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the project was significantly scaled up into a 12 lakh metric tonne integrated ammonia-urea plant, involving an investment of approximately ₹10,000 crore. The Assam government will hold a 40 percent stake in the venture, ensuring substantial state participation in its ownership and benefits.
Sarma described the project as a reflection of the Prime Minister’s approach toward long-term planning and decentralised development, where states are given a greater role in leveraging their natural resources. He said the plant would not only strengthen India’s fertiliser self-reliance but also ensure that the people of Assam gain rightful economic value from resources found within the state.
The upcoming facility is expected to significantly enhance Assam’s industrial profile, create employment opportunities, and stimulate allied sectors such as logistics, infrastructure, and ancillary manufacturing. From an administrative standpoint, the project represents a strategic collaboration between the Centre and the state, aligning national food security goals with regional economic growth.
Once operational, the Namrup fertiliser plant is likely to play a critical role in meeting agricultural demand across the northeastern region and beyond, reducing dependence on imports and improving supply stability for farmers. For Assam, the initiative marks a decisive step toward industrial expansion and economic resilience, reinforcing the state’s position as an emerging hub for large-scale infrastructure and manufacturing projects.
