Railway Overbridge Compensation Row Sparks Tension in Pratapgarh

A dispute erupted in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, as traders protested compensation offered for land acquired for a railway overbridge, claiming they were being paid at residential instead of commercial rates. Revenue officials intervened on-site and assured fair compensation amid rising tensions.

A tense standoff emerged in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, after local traders objected to the compensation being offered for land acquisition tied to the construction of a new railway overbridge. What began as routine groundwork for the infrastructure project escalated into a heated dispute on Monday, prompting the intervention of the district revenue team.

According to traders operating near the construction site, the administration is calculating compensation on the basis of residential property rates, despite the fact that their establishments function strictly as commercial units. They argue that this discrepancy undermines their livelihood and fails to account for the significantly higher market value of commercial land. Several traders expressed frustration, alleging that officials had overlooked their repeated appeals for reassessment.

The disagreement intensified enough for senior revenue officers to visit the location and open discussions with affected business owners. Traders reportedly levelled serious accusations against the officials, claiming a lack of transparency in the compensation process. However, revenue authorities maintained that due procedure was being followed and assured the group that they would receive fair and appropriate compensation in line with legal norms.

As talks continue, the dispute highlights growing friction between development ambitions and the concerns of local stakeholders. With infrastructure expansion accelerating across the region, the outcome of this case may influence how future compensation negotiations are handled, especially in areas where commercial activity plays a central economic role.
