India Signals Potential Mediation Role in West Asia Crisis Amid Stalled US-Iran Peace Talks
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hints at India's potential role in mediating the Iran-US crisis as peace talks in Pakistan stall. Amidst disagreements over nuclear enrichment, US President Donald Trump extends a ceasefire at Pakistan's request, while Iran warns of a military response to the ongoing siege, dismissing the move as a strategic ploy.
The prospect of Indian mediation emerges as the second round of peace negotiations between Iran and the United States, originally scheduled to take place in Pakistan, has stalled. The diplomatic deadlock follows significant disagreements regarding Iran's nuclear enrichment programme. In a bid to salvage the process, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week extension of the ceasefire earlier today, despite his previous assertion hours earlier that he "expected to be bombing."
President Trump clarified that the decision to delay military action was made upon the specific request of Pakistani leadership. Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated: "Based on the fact that the government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal." The President indicated that the extension would remain in effect until Iranian negotiators submit a formal peace proposal.
However, thegesture has been met with sharp hostility from Tehran. Iran dismissed the ceasefire extension as a "ploy to buy time for a surprise strike," asserting that the window for diplomatic patience is closing. Mahdi Mohammadi, expressing the Iranian position on social media, argued that "the losing side cannot dictate terms," and warned that "the continuation of the siege must be met with a military response," declaring that the time for Iran to take the initiative has arrived.
The current situation remains highly volatile, with the international community closely monitoring whether India's balanced diplomatic approach can provide the necessary breakthrough. As the ceasefire extension begins, the shift from military threats to potential mediation underscores the significant geopolitical stakes involved in the fractured relations between Washington and Tehran.
