CCTV Footage Reveals Final Moments Before Dalit Student’s Death in Kannur Dental College

CCTV footage from Anjarakandy Dental College reveals the final 25 minutes of Nithin Raj’s life before his fatal fall in Kannur. The investigation probes a dual crisis involving relentless instant loan app harassment and allegations of caste-based humiliation by teachers. With a Special Investigation Team formed, this report details the legal charges and the harrowing final moments captured on film.

The tragic death of Nithin Raj, a Dalit student at Anjarakandy Dental College in Kannur, has taken a significant turn as CCTV footage from inside the principal’s office captures the high-tension sequence of events unfolding just twenty-five minutes before he fell from the fifth floor of the college building. The newly accessed visuals provide a harrowing glimpse into the final hour of the BDS student, who hailed from a daily wage labourer's family in Thiruvananthapuram, revealing a dual narrative of institutional pressure and relentless digital harassment.

According to police sources, the footage shows teachers interacting with representatives of an instant loan app that had allegedly been making repeated recovery calls linked to a loan taken under Nithin Raj's name. The recording captures an agent on the call refusing to remove the contact numbers of people connected to the student, including that of a professor, from the reference list until the payment was completed. Inside the principal's room, Nithin Raj is seen explaining his situation to the faculty members. In a subsequent clip, the student is seen walking away in tears, a development investigators are treating as a critical piece of evidence in reconstructing the sequence of events leading to his death on the afternoon of April 10.

Teachers had previously stated that Nithin Raj was summoned to the principal's office after they began receiving persistent recovery calls, which they described as a form of harassment. In the wake of the incident, two accused teachers, Dr Ram and Dr Sangeetha Nambiar, have approached the Thalassery Sessions Court seeking anticipatory bail. They argue they played no role in the suicide and suggest that threats from the loan app may have been the primary catalyst. However, the victim’s parents hold caste-based ill-treatment by the professors responsible, a claim supported by emerging audio clips where a young man describes enduring caste-based humiliation

The Chakkarakkal police, who initially registered a case of unnatural death, have since added charges of abetment of suicide under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and invoked the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act based on a complaint by Nithin’s father, Rajan. Kannur City Police Commissioner P Nidhinraj has confirmed the formation of a Special Investigation Team headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Hari Prasad, including cyber cell experts to probe the parallel threads of institutional conduct and loan app harassment.
