DJT Microfinance Ignites Massive Northeast Expansion with Strategic Assam Growth Roadmap
DJT Microfinance launches a major strategic expansion in Assam, aiming to empower 20,000 new members by 2027. This professional roadmap targets the Lower Brahmaputra Valley to provide secure JLG loans to low-income rural women. Adhering to strict NBFC-MFI regulatory guidelines, the move strengthens financial inclusion across Northeast India and builds on the company's 75-branch network.
The expansion is anchored by an ambitious pledge to empower 20,000 new members by 2027, a target that underscores DJT Microfinance’s commitment to scaling financial inclusion. By delivering microfinance services to low-income households, the initiative focuses specifically on empowering women to achieve self-employment in rural and underserved areas through the provision of convenient and secure loans. In its initial phase, the company will concentrate its resources on the Lower Brahmaputra Valley agro-climatic zone, targeting a critical cluster of districts including Darrang, Tamulpur, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Udalguri, and Bajali.
Avinash Kumar, Chief Operating Officer of DJT Microfinance, emphasized that this expansion reflects a long-term commitment to responsible financial inclusion in territories where formal credit access is historically limited. According to Kumar, Assam presents a unique combination of accessibility, economic potential, and strong portfolio stability. He noted that the company intends to adopt a calibrated expansion approach, prioritizing disciplined growth, rigorous governance standards, and customer-centric products specifically tailored to meet local requirements.
The operational backbone of this expansion will be the Joint Liability Group (JLG) lending model, a framework designed to unlock credit for low-income households and micro-entrepreneurs who typically remain excluded from the formal financial system. Having recently commenced operations in the state, DJT Microfinance is currently executing exhaustive market assessments and area surveys to engineer financial products that align with local economic activities and borrower needs. In addition to its current portfolio, the company will introduce specialized, need-based products dictated by regional demand patterns.
Further detailing the administrative framework, Avinash Kumar confirmed that the lending structure remains strictly aligned with NBFC-MFI regulatory guidelines, specifically targeting households with annual incomes up to ₹3 lakh. The company enforces a rigorous financial discipline where the fixed obligation to income ratio is capped at 50% of the household’s monthly income. Adherence to SRO guardrails remains a non-negotiable component of their strategy as they diversify their service portfolio in the region.
Currently, DJT Microfinance manages 75 branches across five states, serving a customer base of approximately 75 thousand individuals. Over the next three years, the institution aims to construct a scalable and stable portfolio in the Northeast, starting with the Assam corridor. The strategy hinges on disciplined customer acquisition, prudent underwriting, and the maintenance of superior asset quality. Through this phased expansion, DJT Microfinance seeks to bridge the gap in formal financial services for underserved households, establishing a resilient and quality-driven financial ecosystem across the eastern and northeastern landscapes of India.
