Razorpay and OpenAI Forge Landmark Alliance to Revolutionize AI-Driven Commerce via Codex Integration
Razorpay and OpenAI have announced a groundbreaking collaboration integrating UPI payments directly into OpenAI Codex and ChatGPT. This first-of-its-kind partnership allows over one million developers to monetize apps in under five minutes using Razorpay’s MCP Server. By enabling agentic payments and AI-driven commerce, the alliance ensures Indian builders can move from a single prompt to a revenue-generating business instantly.
The integration specifically embeds UPI payments directly into OpenAI Codex, allowing developers to bypass the traditional days-long process of manual payment system configuration. By leveraging Razorpay’s MCP Server, builders can now simply instruct the AI to incorporate financial infrastructure during the development phase. Given that India hosts one of the world’s largest developer communities and processes over 20 billion UPI transactions monthly, this collaboration ensures that as AI fundamentally alters software construction, the resulting products are market-ready from their inception.
The operational workflow allows for the transformation of a concept into a payment-enabled product through a single prompt. By enabling the Razorpay MCP integration, a developer can describe a product and its intended charging model to Codex. For instance, a prompt requesting the creation of an AI-powered fitness coaching app with Razorpay collection capabilities will trigger Codex to generate the application while automatically configuring the payment gateway, checkout flows, and collection mechanisms. For student builders, solo founders, and early-stage startups, this advancement eliminates the complex hurdle of building payment infrastructure from the ground up.
Furthermore, the collaboration extends into the ChatGPT ecosystem, bringing comprehensive payment management directly into the conversational interface. Businesses can now install the Razorpay App from the ChatGPT app directory to manage their financial operations through natural language queries. This allows users to match payments with bank statements, verify refund statuses, or track settlements simply by asking questions within the chat.
Shashank Kumar, Co-founder and MD of Razorpay, emphasized that while AI makes building effortless, Razorpay’s vision is to make earning equally seamless. He noted that the next generation of startups will begin with a prompt rather than funding or infrastructure. Supporting this vision, Oliver Jay, Managing Director, International at OpenAI, highlighted the explosive growth of Codex in India, noting a fourfold increase in weekly users during February. He asserted that the ability to move from idea to revenue in a single workflow will profoundly impact the builder community. This launch builds upon Razorpay’s broader objective to power AI-driven commerce, following the introduction of agentic payments at last year’s Global Fintech Fest in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India. Together, these initiatives reflect a future where AI systems securely initiate and complete financial transactions, ensuring that as building becomes easier, earning becomes instant.
