MS Dhoni joins Cars24’s Crashfree India as Goodwill Ambassador to spearhead a nationwide movement against the escalating crisis of road fatalities.
MS Dhoni joins Cars24’s Crashfree India initiative as Goodwill Ambassador to combat India’s road safety crisis. With 1,80,000 fatalities recorded in 2024, this mission aims for zero deaths by 2040. Dhoni and CEO Vikram Chopra emphasize a shift from carelessness to accountability, targeting overspeeding and behavioral change to save the nation's youth and redefine driving culture.
India currently faces a profound and harrowing challenge as it records the highest number of traffic fatalities globally. In 2024 alone, 1,80,000 lives were lost on Indian roads, a staggering rate of one death every three minutes. Despite possessing only 1% of the world’s vehicles, India accounts for 11% of global road fatalities, proving that these losses are not inevitable accidents of fate but a direct call for improved safety frameworks and heightened public awareness. This crisis falls most heavily on the nation’s youth; in 2024, 66% of those killed were aged between 18 and 34, including nearly 10,000 school students. With seven in ten fatalities linked to overspeeding, the data reflects a national failure of behavior, enforcement, and design, necessitating that Crashfree India evolves from a campaign into a movement with permanent staying power.
Reflecting on his decision to join the initiative, MS Dhoni highlighted the uncomfortable truth that many drivers view safety only as a rule to be followed under surveillance. He noted that while vehicles offer freedom, they demand responsibility, patience, and respect for life. Dhoni stated that he decided to take on this role because the mission requires the will to prioritize change rather than more excuses. Vikram Chopra, Founder and CEO of Cars24, emphasized that Dhoni was chosen for his ability to set a harder standard and his refusal to indulge in comfortable language. Chopra noted that Dhoni’s grounded insights into driver behavior and road conditions challenge the mission to push further. For Cars24, which has simplified car ownership since 2015, Crashfree India represents the essential bridge between vehicle access and safety. The Gurugram-based non-profit aims for zero road fatalities by 2040 using a Safe System approach. Dhoni’s alignment signals that road deaths will no longer be accepted as a routine cost of movement but treated as an urgent national failure requiring accountability and prevention.
