‘Divine Voices Made Me Do It’: UP Man Rearrested in Ahmedabad for Repeatedly Harassing Sister-in-Law
A 46-year-old UP man was rearrested in Ahmedabad for repeatedly harassing and molesting his sister-in-law despite being out on bail. Police say he claimed his actions were guided by “divine voices.” Authorities have registered fresh charges as the case highlights concerns over repeat offences.
The accused, identified as Ehraaj Hussain Sheikh, has been residing in Ahmedabad’s Jamalpur area for the past three years. According to police, his behaviour first came to light in 2024, when he developed a one-sided obsession with his aunt’s daughter-in-law. Investigators said he began following the woman regularly, despite repeated objections from her family.
Police officials stated that Ehraaj openly told the woman’s husband that he was in love with her and refused to stop pursuing her. He allegedly continued to follow her movements and threatened to kill anyone who attempted to intervene. A case was registered against him at the Dani Limda police station in 2024, and the matter is currently under trial. He was later released on bail.
However, authorities said his release did not deter him. On December 23, Ehraaj allegedly returned to his aunt’s house in Ahmedabad, where the woman resides. When asked to leave, he reportedly refused. Police said he grabbed the woman’s hand, declared his love for her, and attempted to force her to come with him. He allegedly pressured her to withdraw the ongoing court case by claiming it was false and told her he would keep her with him.
The situation escalated when Ehraaj allegedly tried to drag the woman toward himself. Her mother-in-law intervened and managed to free her, police said. The accused is also alleged to have threatened to kill the woman’s husband during the incident. Following this episode, the woman filed a fresh complaint at the Gaekwad Haveli police station.
A video recorded while Ehraaj was in police custody later circulated widely on social media. In the footage, he is heard claiming that he was acting under instructions from voices he believed to be divine. He stated that he heard voices telling him to take control of the situation and drag the woman, repeatedly attributing these instructions to Allah. Police said he made similar claims during questioning.
An Assistant Commissioner of Police confirmed that a new case has been registered against Ehraaj for stalking, criminal intimidation, and attempting to pressure the woman into giving a false statement before the court. The official said the accused had previously molested the woman and continued to harass her even after legal action was initiated.
“He was in one-sided love with the woman. Despite an FIR and an ongoing trial, he continued to threaten and pressure her to leave her husband and children and live with him. Given the seriousness and repetition of the offence, he has been arrested again, and necessary legal action is underway,” the ACP said.
The case has drawn attention to concerns around repeat offenders, the effectiveness of bail conditions, and the handling of accused persons who claim to be acting under alleged delusions, as the legal process continues.
