Harak Singh Rawat Issues Second Apology Over Remarks on Sikh Community, Urges Calm in Uttarakhand

Harak Singh Rawat has issued a second apology over his remarks on the Sikh community in Uttarakhand, stating the comments were unintentional. After apologising publicly and at a gurdwara, he urged restraint and appealed for the controversy to be resolved peacefully.

Senior Uttarakhand leader Harak Singh Rawat on Wednesday sought to defuse a growing controversy by issuing a second public apology for his remarks concerning the Sikh community, asserting that the comments were unintentional and not the result of deliberate thought. Emphasising reconciliation over confrontation, Rawat appealed for restraint and urged that the matter be laid to rest in the interest of social harmony.

Addressing the issue directly, Rawat said the words that triggered the backlash were spoken inadvertently and did not reflect his personal beliefs or intentions. In a bid to demonstrate sincerity, he offered apologies at two separate venues—first on a public platform and later at a gurdwara—underscoring his respect for the Sikh community and its sentiments.

Seeking to contextualise his appeal, Rawat noted that public discourse in India has, at times, shown maturity and restraint even in response to comments made by the country’s highest leadership. He questioned why similar understanding could not be extended after he had acknowledged his mistake and apologised without reservation. According to him, prolonging the controversy would serve little purpose now that responsibility has been accepted.

The incident has drawn attention in Uttarakhand’s political and social circles, where leaders and community representatives have called for dialogue and calm. Rawat’s repeated apologies appear aimed at preventing further escalation and restoring trust amid sensitivities surrounding community relations.

As the situation unfolds, the episode highlights the fragile nature of public discourse and the importance of accountability in leadership. Whether the controversy subsides will depend largely on how stakeholders respond to Rawat’s renewed call for closure and communal harmony.
